An invite from the White House . . . The Warren-Sharpe kids had been planting tomatoes, watering cucumbers, building bean poles and wrangling worms all summer long. When U.S. Representative Bill Foster came to visit, he learned that they dreamed of visiting the First Lady’s garden, and he decided to lend a hand.

On August 17, 2015, they stepped onto the south lawn of the White House, and saw for themselves that dreams can come true. In a neighborhood with more guns than jobs, the Warren-Sharpe kids created a garden of hope.

After returning from Washington, DC, they wrote a cookbook to share the story of what they learned -- about gardening and cooking, about reclaiming their community, and about growing the future.  “The physical and emotional health of an entire generation, and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake. This isn’t the kind of problem (access to healthy food) that can be solved overnight, but with everyone working together, it can be solved. So, let’s move!”

A Letter to The First Lady, Michelle Obama

“Dear Mrs. Obama,

Thank you for letting us come and see your garden. I had fun on the trip. I loved your garden and your house. I hope you come and see our garden sometime, because it is a lot bigger than yours.”
